Wally the Touch Dog

Your Name

:

Kathy Howard

Name of your dog or cat

:

Wally

Why do you consider this dog or cat a hero?

Wally is a Touch Therapy Dog and visits at Children's Hospital in St. Louis where he is a hero every week in the Oncology Unit.
Chemotherapy is scary for everyone but when you are 3 (or 7 or 12) years old, all of it can be terrifying. Wally regularly comes to the rescue! With his calm demeanor and his gentle ways, he offers comfort and normalcy in a situation that is anything but normal. He is a wonderful distraction to the world of needles, dressings, procedures and other very unpleasant happenings!

How has this dog or cat helped someone in need?

:

At almost every visit Wally helps a child who is getting their port accessed for chemo. The children will take off their shoes and socks and put their bare feet on his back as he lies at their feet. They hold the leash, often white-knuckled, and, while the nurses are doing their job, Wally provides the needed distraction.
Children are willing to be cooperative if they think Wally needs them to be and he is always so proud of them when they are brave.
Wally thinks his kids are heros!

If you win, which service organization would you like to receive the $5,000 donation?

: Support Dogs Inc.

Wally brightens the day of a whole school when he walks in the door! Our students are encouraged by the spring in his step and the wag of his tal. We love you Wally! Linda Jones

Thanks for all the kind comments and support of Wally. I only wish that everyone could see what a difference the therapy dogs make to the kids that are in the hospital. I try to tell the stories on his Facebook page, Wally the Touch Dog, but sometimes can not do justice to the situation. To get to see a little one's face light up when she sees a dog walk into the room is priceless. For a while, they are not a kid who is bald and attached to an IV line dripping chemo into their vein...they are just a kid with a dog. It is equally gratifying to see a young man with Down's Syndrome, work up his courage over months to be able to hold the leash, then pet a toe, then pet a head and, the pinnacle of success, ask if Wally can sit on his lap!

I know Wally and I will say that the work he does is Amazing. His mom, Kathy, and I are connected through a charity walk we do. Ever since I have known Kathy she has sent me mail from Wally while on these events. Wally sends me a trading card, and I carry it as I walk. Wally has gotten me through a lot :). I hope wally wins this so that Support Dogs Inc can benefit.

Our family loves Wally. Even though Wally lives in Missouri and we live on the east coast he heard about my daughter last year and quickly became a pen pal to her. She undergoes treatment at Children's National and unfortunately we do not have therapy dogs like Wally at our hospital. But Wally writes to her and he has also rallied a lot of his friends to write to her too. She has a kennel of furry pen pals from St. Louis. She loves her letters and pictures from Wally. Good luck Wally we hope you win because you deserve it :)

Wally visits our school for special needs students every other week. Kids who won't normally speak or interact with others actually get so excited when Wally visits that they open up to him and he enables us to see happiness shine in their eyes and on their faces. Wally is the #1 dog in the hearts of our teens!

Wally, you are so very special and the world is changed because of you and your momma, Kathy. Thank you for being a part of my niece's life and for putting a smile on the faces of children who so desperately need a smile. - Shannon M.

My son is a patient at Children's and my mom spent many years with her canine good citizen bringing hope and joy to many people, adults and children alike! I am so thankful for the therapy that dogs/pets can bring! Go Wally!!

Wally really hopes he can win for Support Dogs but, if he wins, he is going to give the dog food certificates to Heartland Humane Society of MO...the rescue group that took in his mom and delivered him and his siblings. Wally was born on December 4th, 9 years ago. His mom was already emaciated so there is no way that Wally and his siblings would have survived outside at this time of year.
Wally will donate his food so other dogs that are brought in to Heartland will have food.

A little of Wally's back story. He is a few days from 9 years old and was a rescue. His mom, a chocolate lab, was brought in...she was emaciated and her ears were a mess but she was sweet. Heartland Humane Society took her on and her foster mom took her to work each day at the Technical High School where she worked as a teacher in the vet tech program.
Then they found out that the mom was pregnant.
Eight black lab puppies were born and nurtured from Day One by the foster mom and students at the Vet Tech program. Wally was handled by kids, with love, from birth on. That continued when he came to our home as a young pup.
He has never lost his appreciation of kids, whether they are babies who are leaning into him, toddlers who run up and wrap their arms around him or teens loom over him to deliver hugs and kisses. He takes it all in!

I think the 'job' that Wally does is quite remarkable. He and his 'master'/owner handler give of their time to help these children to receive their much needed treatment in a more palatable way. Dealing with cancer is not easy in any situation or at any age, and if our canine friends, and Wally here in particular, can administer their special brand of medication, it is truly a blessing.
